Frequently Asked Questions
How does a landfill work?
A landfill is a permitted site where waste is deposited, compacted, and managed to reduce environmental impact. At TKI, in addition to our Construction and Demolition (C&D) landfills, we operate public drop-off sites designed to provide the community with a responsible option for disposing of and recycling materials that are not typically accepted through standard trash service. Materials are organized and segregated on-site to ensure they are directed to the appropriate recycling or disposal method. Our landfills accept materials such as concrete, asphalt, wood, and drywall and operate under the governance of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
Is there a landfill near me?
TKI operates two convenient public drop-off and landfill sites in central Minnesota, one in Cold Spring (serving the St. Cloud area) and one in Glenwood (serving the Alexandria area). Both locations accept a wide range of materials from homeowners, contractors, and businesses. Find hours and addresses on our locations section above.
Is the landfill open on Sundays?
TKI's public drop-off and landfill sites in Cold Spring and Glenwood are open Monday through Friday only, with no weekend hours including Saturdays. Hours do vary by season, so it's worth planning your haul ahead of time or calling either location directly to confirm before making the trip.
What time does the landfill close?
TKI's drop-off and landfill sites close at 5 PM during summer months (April–October) and at 4:30 PM during winter months (November–March). That half-hour difference adds up, especially if you're hauling a larger load after a full day on the job site. Both Cold Spring and Glenwood follow the same schedule, so factor in your drive time and leave yourself enough of a window to unload comfortably.
Does recycling fo to the landfill?
Not all recycling goes to a landfill. TKI’s public drop-off sites are designed to help customers properly dispose of materials while maximizing recycling whenever possible. When customers arrive, they are directed to specific areas based on the type of material they are bringing in. Whenever possible, recyclable materials such as metals, concrete, asphalt, clean wood, and yard waste are separated and diverted to recycling markets.
In cases where materials are directed to the landfill, the process does not end there. Materials pass through a screening and working area where staff identify and recover recyclable commodities whenever possible. This additional step helps reduce the amount of waste that ultimately remains in the landfill and supports more sustainable material management practices.
